Did the name Dòng Con Đức Mẹ Vô Nhiễm ever cross your path before today? Here, at 22 Đường số 3, in Bình Chiểu, Thủ Đức, Ho Chi Minh City, stands a testament to faith and service. The Dòng Con Đức Mẹ Vô Nhiễm, also known as the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (FMI), began not here, but in Huế, in 1920. Picture the scene: six young nuns, filled with a profound love for God and a desire to educate, stepping out from the Mến Thánh Giá Dòng Săn. Their founder, Father Eugène Marie Joseph Allys, known locally as Father Lý, envisioned a group dedicated to teaching and cultural development, especially for young girls. He recognized the need for trained educators in the region, a need these women aimed to fulfill. On September 8th, 1920, Father Alexandre Paul Marie Chabanon formally established the Dòng Con Đức Mẹ Vô Nhiễm. This date, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, became a significant marker in the congregation’s history. The FMI’s motto, “Love of God and Immaculately Pure,” encapsulates their dedication. Originally called Dòng Con Đức Bà Chẳng hề Mặc Tội Tổ Tông, they later adopted the name we know today. Their initial focus, education, expanded over the years to include healthcare and social work. They embraced the Vietnamese Áo Dài as their habit, a conscious decision reflecting their commitment to cultural integration. Father Chabanon played a crucial role in shaping the FMI’s spiritual foundation, composing their first set of rules and emphasizing devotion to the Virgin Mary. He urged them to “entrust their souls to the Immaculate Virgin, recognizing her as their true Mother.” The FMI continued to grow, extending their reach across various dioceses, even reaching as far as the highlands of Pleiku to serve the Jrai communities. Today, the Dòng Con Đức Mẹ Vô Nhiễm remains committed to their founding principles. They continue to serve in education, healthcare, and social work, enriching the lives of countless individuals throughout Vietnam. Their presence here in Ho Chi Minh City marks just one chapter in their remarkable journey of faith and service.
