Don Powell Theatre

Did you know that the Don Powell Theatre wasn’t always called that? Originally built in 1967, it was simply known as the Main Stage Theatre. It served as the heart of San Diego State University’s School of Theatre, Television, & Film. Imagine the echoes of aspiring actors rehearsing their lines, the hurried footsteps of stagehands, and the thrill of opening night. This stage has seen it all, from Shakespearean tragedies to modern musicals. In 1987, the Main Stage Theatre was renamed the Don Powell Theatre. The theatre became a hub for not only theatre students but also the music department. Think of the soaring melodies and rhythmic beats that filled this space. Productions like “Romeo and Juliet” in December 1987, “Sweeney Todd” in 1988, and “Into the Woods” in 1992 graced its stage. The Don Powell Theatre, with its 500 seats, became a beloved venue for the university and the wider San Diego community. Fast forward to 2023, the Don Powell Theatre underwent a significant renovation. The university envisioned creating a true performing arts district. This meant not just upgrading the theatre but also adding a new flexible studio space called the Conrad Prebys Theatre and a new amenities building. The renovation brought the Don Powell Theatre up to current standards, improving accessibility, sightlines, and technical capabilities. Imagine the state-of-the-art lighting, the motorized rigging, and the enhanced acoustics. The Don Powell Theatre continues to be a vibrant center for the arts at San Diego State University, a testament to its rich history and enduring legacy.
