Don Mueang, meaning “the upland where the town is located”, was once a quiet area known as “Don I Yiao”, or “the upland of hawks”. This name, a nod to its elevated terrain and abundant birdlife, evokes images of a peaceful past before the roar of airplanes filled the sky. The arrival of the Royal Thai Air Force base, under King Vajiravudh, marked a turning point. The name changed to Don Mueang, and the district began its transformation into the bustling area we know today. The Don Mueang District Office itself may not be a historical landmark, but it plays a vital role in managing the affairs of this rapidly evolving district. It’s the local governing body. The office oversees everything from public services to local regulations, ensuring the smooth functioning of the district. In 1989, Don Mueang officially became a district, separating from Bang Khen. Years later, in 1997, it further divided to create the Lak Si district. This division highlights the district’s growth and development, its boundaries constantly shifting to accommodate the expanding city. Today, the Don Mueang District is a blend of old and new. Residential areas and local shops coexist with larger malls like Future Park Rangsit and the IT hub, Zeer Rangsit. The Don Mueang International Airport dominates the local economy. It serves as the headquarters for Airports of Thailand and Thai Lion Air, and houses the offices of R Airlines and Solar Air. This bustling airport connects Don Mueang to the world, driving economic activity and shaping the district’s identity. Just south of the airport’s domestic terminal, you’ll find the Royal Thai Air Force Museum, a treasure trove of aviation history. This museum, founded in 1952, houses rare aircraft and chronicles Thailand’s role in WWII. While the Don Mueang District Office may not have the grandeur of ancient temples or the allure of bustling markets, it represents the heart of this dynamic district.
