Before us stands the Don Coleman Community Coliseum. This arena echoes with the cheers of crowds and the squeak of sneakers on the court. It’s more than just a building. It’s a hub of community pride and athletic achievement.
The Don Coleman Community Coliseum was completed in 1974. It originally cost $1.3 million. For many years it was known as the Spring Branch Community Coliseum. In 1992 it was renamed to honor Don Coleman. Coleman was a local basketball coaching icon.
Don Coleman coached at nearby Memorial High School for 37 years. He started there in 1962. He left an incredible legacy. His teams achieved remarkable success. The 1966 team even won a state championship. Coleman’s impact went beyond wins and losses. He shaped the lives of many young athletes. He is still among the top high school coaches nationally.
This 5000-seat arena hosts many events. High school sports are a regular feature. It also hosted a visit by President Gerald Ford in 1976. The 1984 Trans-America Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament was held here. The Don Coleman Coliseum has a versatile space.
The Spring Branch Independent School District uses the coliseum for graduations. Convocations and volleyball matches also occur here. You might even see gymnastics or martial arts events. Church services have been held here too. The SBMSA Basketball Tournament Championships are a highlight. Basketball is the primary activity in the Don Coleman Community Coliseum. The district’s four high schools use it for games and tournaments.
The coliseum’s floor is a key feature. It has a 7780 square foot wood playing surface. This provides an excellent surface for basketball and other sports.

The legacy of Don Coleman lives on here. TABC Coach of the Year Award was renamed the “Don Coleman Award”. In 2009 Memorial High School Gymnasium was also renamed “Don Coleman Gymnasium”. In 2019 the “Aspire To Greatness” bronze statue was unveiled in the Don Coleman Coliseum.
