Gazing upon the Dominikanerkirche, one might initially overlook its unassuming exterior. But step inside, and you’ll discover a hidden gem. The Dominikanerkirche in Augsburg greets you with an abundance of light. This former Dominican church, also known as St. Magdalena or the Preacher’s Church, possesses a unique architectural feature. Its two-aisled hall church, divided by a central row of columns with Corinthian capitals, creates a bright, open space rarely found in other church buildings. This airy atmosphere stands in stark contrast to the often confined spaces of traditional sacred structures. The Dominikanerkirche’s history is as captivating as its architecture. Its origins trace back to the 13th century when the grounds belonged to the Knights Templar. They established a church on this very spot. In 1313, following the Templars’ dissolution, the Bishop of Augsburg transferred the church and grounds to the Dominican Order. The present structure, built upon the foundations of the Templar’s church, was completed in 1515. For centuries, it served as the Dominican monastery’s church until secularization in 1802. The Dominikanerkirche’s treasures, including the captivating figure of Mary Magdalene by Gregor Erhart (now in the Louvre) and altarpieces by Tintoretto and Lanfranco, were scattered after secularization. The church faced an uncertain future. Discussions arose about its demolition. Yet, thanks to generous patrons, the Dominikanerkirche survived. In 1913, a comprehensive renovation began, funded by Augsburg textile manufacturer Hugo Ritter von Forster. This allowed the church to find new life as the city’s art gallery. After World War II, during which the monastery complex was destroyed, the Dominikanerkirche housed the Roman Museum from 1966 to 2012. The Dominikanerkirche now stands closed to the public since 2012. Its story, however, continues to resonate within its walls. While static issues and necessary renovations keep its doors temporarily shut, its unique architecture and rich history remain. The Dominikanerkirche in Augsburg stands as a testament to adaptation and resilience, a silent narrator of the city’s vibrant past.
