Right here lies a tribute to a multifaceted man. This is the memorial to Domingos Monteiro. Who was Domingos Monteiro? He was more than just a name. He was a lawyer, a poet and a writer. Domingos Monteiro earned recognition as one of Portugal’s most celebrated writers between the 1940s and 1960s.

Domingos Monteiro was born in Barqueiros. Barqueiros is a place within Mesão Frio. His birth occurred on November 6, 1903. He died in Lisbon on August 17, 1980.

Domingos Monteiro’s life was rich and varied. He studied at the Liceu Central de Camilo Castelo Branco. This school was in Vila Real. He later graduated in Law from the University of Lisbon in 1927. He achieved a high mark. It was an 18 out of 20.

Domingos Monteiro’s democratic ideals led him to found the Partido da Renovação Democrática. He also established the Diário Liberal newspaper. His literary vocation eventually surpassed his legal and political activities. He gained fame and recognition as a writer.

Domingos Monteiro also worked as a journalist. He was a critic and an editor. He was responsible for the Serviço de Bibliotecas Itinerantes. This was part of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. In 1948, he founded the Sociedade de Expansão Cultural. It played a notable role in promoting Portuguese authors.

As a young man, Domingos Monteiro published poems in O Dilúculo. It was a local youth newspaper. At sixteen, he debuted with his first book of verses. It was titled Orações do Crepúsculo. Teixeira de Pascoaes wrote an admiring preface.

Domingos Monteiro also explored history and essay writing. He ventured into criticism and theater. His renown came mainly from fiction. He favored the novella. It is a form between a short story and a novel. He published over fifteen titles. Among them are O Mal e o Bem. Also noteworthy is O Primeiro Crime de Simão Bolandas. It won the Prémio Nacional de Novelística and the Prémio Diário de Notícias. Letícia e o Lobo Júpiter also won the Prémio Nacional de Novelística.

Domingos Monteiro’s works were translated into several languages. These included Spanish, English and Russian. They featured in national and international anthologies.

Domingos Monteiro received the grade of Commander of the Military Order of Sant’Iago da Espada on July 4, 1973.

A solemn session was held in his honor in 2003. In 2010, the Escola Básica e Secundária de Mesão Frio adopted the project Ler.com/DomingosMonteiro.
