Ever wondered about a tree that heralds spring with a snowy white display? That’s the Dombea rotundifolia, also known as the wild pear. It is not related to the pear tree.

The Dombea rotundifolia is a small deciduous tree. Its dark grey to blackish bark is deeply fissured. This tree is a common sight in Southern Africa extending northwards to central and eastern tropical Africa.

Joseph Dombey inspired the Dombeya’s name. He was a French botanist who worked in Peru and Chile. The name rotundifolia describes its round leaves.

Notice the masses of white blooms on the Dombea rotundifolia. They appear before the leaves in early spring. The tree looks like a true pear tree in full flower. The flowers appear from July to September. The earlier flowering occurs in warmer northern areas.

The flowers persist on the Dombea rotundifolia even after the fruit capsules form. The petals turn brown and become dry and light. They act as wings to float the ripe fruit away.

Feel the rough corky bark of the Dombea rotundifolia. It is dark brown. This bark forms a fire-resistant layer around the trunk. The leaves are almost round and covered with star-like hairs.

The Dombea rotundifolia grows in woodland, grassland and rocky slopes. This tree is both frost and drought resistant. It grows very fast about 1 to 1.5 meters per year. It typically reaches a height of 3 to 6 meters but can grow up to 10 meters.

Imagine the uses of the Dombea rotundifolia. Strong rope fibre comes from its bark. It is used medicinally. Some even make a love potion from its flowers. The wood is termite-resistant and often becomes fence posts. Bee farmers love it for the abundant nectar and pollen.

The Dombea rotundifolia attracts bees and butterflies. It’s a larval food plant for the Ragged Skipper butterfly. People use its dried flowers in flower arranging. Some people cultivate it as a bonsai. After 2 or 3 years, it develops corky bark and smaller leaves.

The Dombea rotundifolia stands out on bare hillsides. It blooms in profusion before the leaves appear. The flowers are sweetly scented. They dry beautifully. You can even use them for potpourri.

Freshly cut timber has a strong aroma of fishmeal. Its timber with greyish-blue heartwood is suitable for woodworking.

The Dombea rotundifolia is a beautiful, useful and interesting tree. It is a true herald of spring. Its presence enriches our landscape and lives.
