Could the stones before us speak, what tales would they tell about the Dólmen de Outeiro de Ante 3? This megalithic monument whispers secrets from the first half of the 4th Millennium BC. It is a tangible link to our ancient past.
Welcome to the Dólmen de Outeiro de Ante 3, a significant site within the Conjunto Megalítico de Outeiro de Ante. These stones stand in the Serra da Aboboreira. This area is part of the present-day parish of Campelo e Ovil. It is located in the Municipality of Baião in northern Portugal. This cluster includes four known mamoas or mounds. Three have been studied, including the Dólmen de Outeiro de Ante 3.
In 1978, excavations began here in the Serra da Aboboreira. The excavation of Mamoa 3 marked a turning point. It was the first time in Portugal that an entire tumulus was investigated. Previous explorations had focused only on the megalithic chamber and its funerary “spoils.”
The Dólmen de Outeiro de Ante 3 itself is a medium-sized dolmen. A small entrance faces east. A threshold marks this entrance. Originally, seven pillars supported this structure. Only four remain today. Archaeologists identified their original positions during excavations. They also found a possible fragment of a capstone. It remains on top of the tumulus. Two other pillar fragments mark the location of missing pillars.
Imagine the people who built this Dólmen de Outeiro de Ante 3. They carefully placed each stone. They created a place of significance. Analysis of charcoals at the base of another mamoa nearby indicated dates between 4810 and 2290 BC. This is the beginning of the fifth to the end of the third millennium BC. This gives us a sense of the era of the Dólmen de Outeiro de Ante 3.
The Campo Arqueológico da Serra da Aboboreira was crucial to understanding this site. The project began in 1978. It aimed to create a permanent research unit. This unit would actively study and survey archaeological mapping. The initial focus was on the megalithic set of Serra da Aboboreira. The discovery of other structures broadened the scope. These included settlements in pits and burials.
The Dólmen de Outeiro de Ante 3 was consolidated by a single layer of stones. These were shaped like slabs. This layer was in the central upper part around the chamber. Smaller blocks of quartzite or quartz filled the base and gaps between these stones. These were intentionally broken to reinforce the structure. Further out, the layer became double, triple, or quadruple. The slabs at the periphery were larger and deeper. The interlocking of stones in well-preserved areas was perfect. Many stones were specifically shaped to fit the space.
Restoration work took place in 2006. It was not possible to determine if the chamber was closed or open. The mamoa was then covered with soil. Geotextile fabric was placed inside the chamber. A buttress system and a simple drainage system were constructed.
Standing here, consider the passage of time. The Dólmen de Outeiro de Ante 3 has witnessed millennia of history. It connects us to the beliefs and practices of those who came before. It is a testament to human ingenuity and enduring spirit.
