A subtriangular shape etched into stone. That’s what first caught my eye at the Dólmen da Leira Longa. This isn’t just any ancient site. This is a portal to the past. A testament to a civilization that thrived millennia ago.

The Dólmen da Leira Longa also known as the Lamoso Dolmen or the Oven of the Moors stands before you. Its massive burial mound dominates the landscape. It has a diameter of about 25 meters and a height of 3 meters. Inside lies a polygonal chamber. Nine uprights support a fractured cover slab. Imagine the effort it must have taken to construct this.

This isn’t just a pile of stones. This is a carefully planned structure. The chamber measures approximately 2.3 meters long and 2.8 meters wide. It is about 2.2 meters high. Notice how the uprights are imbricated. They lean inwards for stability. They’re granite monoliths. A short corridor about 3 meters long and 1 meter wide leads to the chamber. Eight more uprights form its walls. A cover slab still rests in place above some of them.

Archaeologists have unearthed fascinating artifacts here. A polished axe a fragmented flint blade and a chisel. These are now in museums. They whisper tales of daily life. They reveal the skills and artistry of these long-gone people. The excavation also uncovered remains of pottery and tools. These offer more clues into their lives. But the most impressive find? The subtriangular figure carved onto the capstone. Its meaning remains mysterious. It hints at a rich symbolic world.

The Dólmen da Leira Longa sits in a peaceful spot. It’s in a small valley. The Eiriz and Carvalhosa rivers flow nearby. The area is dotted with pine trees and low-lying vegetation. It’s a place of quiet contemplation. A place to reflect on the passage of time. A place where the past and the present meet.

This monument is more than just ruins. It’s a living connection to a time long past. It’s a reminder of the enduring human spirit. It’s a piece of history you can touch. A place where you can feel the weight of millennia. Remember this feeling as you journey on. Remember the Dólmen da Leira Longa. Remember its story.
