Let’s delve into the story of Carlos María Cortezo. He was born in Madrid in 1850. He died there in 1933. Doctor Cortezo was more than just a physician. He was a pioneer of bacteriology in Spain. He studied abroad with masters of histology and physiopathology.

Doctor Cortezo secured a position at the Hospital de la Princesa in 1873. Just two years later he became its dean. His political career began alongside the republican Castelar. He served as a liberal senator. In 1899 he became Director General of Sanidad. He held this role again from 1902 to 1904. During this time Doctor Cortezo published the famous Instrucción General de Sanidad.

In 1906 Doctor Cortezo was appointed Minister of Public Instruction. He established the Instituto de Higiene Alfonso XIII. He placed Nobel laureate Santiago Ramón y Cajal at its head. Doctor Cortezo equipped the institute with the best scientists and resources. He co-founded the Sociedad Española de Higiene with Méndez Álvaro.
