Beneath our feet lies over 168000 square meters of land. This is the Distrito Telefónica. It stands as Telefónica’s global headquarters right here in Madrid.
Originally known as Distrito C, it transformed into Distrito Telefónica in 2011. Think of it as more than just offices. It’s a hub.
Designed by Rafael de La-Hoz, construction took only 36 months. The location is in Las Tablas. This is a growing area between Madrid and Alcobendas.
The Distrito Telefónica is quite accessible. You can reach it from the A-1 and the M-40 ring road. Even the Madrid Metro has a station here named Ronda de la Comunicación.
Imagine a project recognized for its innovative design. The management of the Metro station and roads earned praise. The buildings cover 140000 square meters.
At the time, it was Europe’s largest project using glass. It surpassed even the Financial City of Banco Santander and Madrid-Barajas Airport. The Distrito Telefónica comprises thirteen office buildings. Four buildings have ten stories. The others have three or four floors.
A shopping center is open to the public here. There are also additional services. You can find a clinic, banks, a pharmacy, and even a Movistar store. The goal? To consolidate all company resources. This ensures significant savings and efficient management.
The investment exceeded 500 million euros. Telefónica financed it mainly by selling or renting properties in Madrid. Distrito Telefónica hosts around 14000 people every day. This includes staff and visitors.
The design incorporates energy-saving features. Air conditioning and heating costs are lower. There is a 15% saving in winter and 34% in summer. CO2 emissions decrease by 5000 tons annually. Glass facades reduce lighting costs by 42%.
The gardens were planned by James Braybrook. The gardens interpret Telefónica’s corporate identity. References to traditional Spanish gardens are mixed in. The design considers sunlight, air flows, and water currents.
Water is a key element here. It connects the squares and the rest of the complex. The Parque de las Comunicaciones features a central lake. Two terraced garden areas feed the lake. They are called Jardines de los Caños.
There are four squares called Gardens of Diversity. They are located at the cardinal points. These are the North, East, South, and West Squares. Each square offers unique flora due to its orientation.
Distrito Telefónica has won awards. It received the “Premio a la Obra Internacional” at the XI Bienal Internacional de Arquitectura Argentina BA07. It also won the Premio Aedip in 2009.
