Across the sprawling expanse of green, Kumeyaay Park of Chula Vista, formerly known as Discovery Park, beckons. Discovery Park stands as a testament to both community spirit and a rich, sometimes turbulent, history. Discovery Park officially opened its gates to the public. Today, this 20.4-acre park offers a vibrant hub for recreation and relaxation. Families gather at the playground, the laughter of children echoing through the air as they navigate the slides and swings. Athletes test their skills on the ball fields, their energy adding to the park’s dynamic atmosphere. Meanwhile, others find solace in the vast grassy area, perhaps enjoying a picnic or simply basking in the California sunshine. Discovery Park also bears witness to moments of controversy. In 2018, the park was unfortunately linked to an alleged middle school fight club. Then, a statue of Christopher Columbus, which once stood within the park’s grounds, became a focal point of debate and vandalism. Ultimately, the statue was removed in 2021. The park’s name change in 2022 to Kumeyaay Park of Chula Vista marked a significant step towards acknowledging the ancestral lands of the Kumeyaay Nation. Today, as you stroll through Kumeyaay Park, formerly Discovery Park, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history woven into its landscape. From children’s laughter to moments of reflection, Discovery Park continues to evolve, serving as a vital green space for the Chula Vista community.
