Have you ever wondered how a busy city like Houston could have a beautiful, vibrant green space in its heart? Right here, in the heart of downtown Houston, you’ll find Discovery Green. It opened in April 2008, bringing 12 acres of urban park to life. The story of Discovery Green is like the story of Houston itself. It’s a tale of audacity, practicality, diversity, and talent. What was once a high-end residential neighborhood in the late 19th century was transformed into a bustling hub for the city. In the early 20th century, Union Station was built, and residential homes were cleared for hotels. But the area declined, and downtown development shifted westward. This left a large expanse of land as nothing more than parking lots for decades. However, in a stroke of brilliant urban renewal planning, a group of philanthropists, led by Maconda Brown O’Connor and Nancy G. Kinder, decided to revive this space. They approached Mayor Bill White in 2002 with a vision for a public green space. The project was a public-private partnership, with support from the Wortham Foundation and the Houston Endowment. The City of Houston acquired a portion of the land in 2002 and purchased the remainder in 2004, setting the stage for development. The city mandated public engagement in the design process, and with the guidance of Project for Public Spaces, extensive public meetings and focus groups were conducted to gather feedback and shape the park’s programming. These meetings resulted in the selection of the iconic name “Discovery Green,” a name that embodies the park’s essence of education, delight, and surprise. This partnership is a testament to the innovative spirit that keeps Houston moving forward. The Conservancy, established in 2004, is a non-profit organization that operates and maintains Discovery Green.
