A legacy of Alexander N Diomedes a prominent figure in Greek banking. He and his wife Julia left a remarkable gift. Their estate became the foundation for this magnificent space.

Established in the 1950s the garden’s story is one of dedication and perseverance. It took time. The Ministry of Agriculture granted the land in 1961. The garden didn’t fully blossom until 1975 when its gates first opened to the public. Professor Herta Hammerbacher a landscape architecture expert from TU Berlin oversaw its design. The result is breathtaking.

These resilient plants are truly unique. The garden’s herbarium houses over 19000 dried plant samples. Its genetic bank preserves gametes from over 800 species.

Explore the historical plant section. It’s unlike any other. You’ll find plants mentioned in Greek mythology. Discover plants featured in the Old and New Testaments. See hemlock the plant used in the death of Socrates. Marvel at the giant fennel where Prometheus hid fire stolen from the gods.

The ornamental plant section is equally enchanting. Paved areas pergolas and benches invite quiet contemplation. Dahlias irises and narcissi burst with color. The rose garden boasts over 100 types of roses. A walk through the bamboo forest leads to a pond. Stepping stones create the illusion of walking on water.

The Diomedes Botanical Garden is more than a botanical haven. It’s a wildlife sanctuary. ANIMA a non-profit organization works here. They rehabilitate rescued wild animals. The garden serves as a living laboratory. Students from the University of Athens conduct research here. It also has an Environmental Awareness Center.
