Brunei’s art scene often highlights utilitarian objects. Think bowls and tools. Sculpting as a widespread practice isn’t common but notable sculptures do exist. This Dinosaur Statue is one of them.
Consider the Mercu Dirgahayu 60 monument. It commemorates the Sultan’s 60th birthday. Located on the waterfront it embodies the Sultan’s leadership and Muslim faith. Another striking example is found at ASEAN Square in Damuan Recreational Park. It displays sculptors’ work from the original six ASEAN member countries symbolizing Harmony in Diversity.

ASEAN Square features six outdoor sculptures. Artists from Brunei Darussalam Malaysia Indonesia Singapore Thailand and the Philippines created them. These sculptures came to life during the Fourth ASEAN Square Sculpture Symposium held in 1986. Students from local colleges assisted each sculptor. The public unveiling occurred in December 1987. Heights vary from 3 meters to nearly 6.5 meters. Some weigh several tons.
“Harmony in Diversity” is the sculptures’ theme. They embody ASEAN solidarity. They represent aspirations like love peace freedom and mutual respect. Each sculpture showcases unique artistic concepts. Haji Marsidi Haji Akip from Brunei created “The World of ASEAN”. It reflects ASEAN’s formation and growth. Eduardo Castrillo from the Philippines designed “Brunei Entelechy”. It features a Muslim crescent moon motif representing tradition. Its extended structure signifies atomic energy and modern development.
The Mercu Dirgahayu 60 sculpture further enriches Brunei’s artistic landscape. It’s a gilded fountain monument honoring Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s 60th birthday. Erected in 2006 or 2007 it graces Kampong Ayer’s waterfront. A local architect designed it. The tall bent column displays the number 60 in Arabic signifying the Sultan’s visionary leadership. A steel cable supports the number symbolizing the strong ruler-subject relationship. Five pillars at the base represent the five Muslim duties. Water sprouts from these pillars symbolizing Brunei’s peace and prosperity. The fishing net design nods to the water village lifestyle.
At night the Mercu Dirgahayu 60 sculpture glows ethereally. It enhances the waterfront atmosphere. Art galleries cafes restaurants and shopping outlets surround it. This sculpture is one of many tributes to Brunei’s Sultan.
“Mercu Dirgahayu 60” translates to “Long Life Your Highness 60 Monument”. “Dirgahayu” means “long life”. “Mercu” signifies apex or the highest point.
