“A sacred aura,” whispered a villager, “envelops Đình Làng Thanh Trì.” Đình Làng Thanh Trì stands amidst a bustling village. Its architecture is captivating. Time has etched its stories onto the very stones of this sacred place. Today, Đình Làng Thanh Trì rests on Nguyễn Khoái Street in the Thanh Trì ward of Hanoi’s Hoàng Mai district. But its journey began much earlier, during the Nguyễn Dynasty, as evidenced by stelae dating back to the Gia Long era. The heart of Đình Làng Thanh Trì beats with the stories of its deities. While the exact identities remain a mystery shrouded in local lore, their contributions to the village are celebrated. Names like Thành Linh Lang đại vương, Thành Cao Sơn đại vương, and Thành Đô Hộ đại vương echo through generations. The year 1877 marked a significant restoration, thanks to Trần Thị Khiết, a Thanh Trì villager serving in the royal court. Her dedication led to the construction of two grand halls and provisions for communal gatherings. Đình Làng Thanh Trì also carries scars of war. During the French resistance, the main structure was destroyed, leaving only the outer gate and the front worship area. But the spirit of the village remained unbroken. Precious artifacts were carefully moved to Triệu Khánh Pagoda for safekeeping. The community’s perseverance finally paid off in 1993 when Đình Làng Thanh Trì was resurrected on its original grounds. The architecture of Đình Làng Thanh Trì is a blend of elegance and resilience. The main building is a classic four-pillar design, with curved corners that evoke a sense of fluidity. Dragon motifs adorn the roof, symbolizing strength and protection. The entrance features a ceremonial gate guarded by dragon heads. Inside, a platform holds the statues of deities, while intricately carved beams tell stories of mythical creatures and auspicious symbols. Three stelae, remnants of different eras, offer glimpses into the past. A collection of artifacts, including an eight-piece bát bửu dating back to the 19th century, adds layers of historical richness. The surrounding gardens, with their lush foliage and serene pond, complete the tranquil setting. Đình Làng Thanh Trì is more than just a building. It’s the soul of Thanh Trì village, a testament to the community’s enduring spirit and a vibrant celebration of Vietnamese culture.
