Has anyone ever considered the strange twists of fate, like how a quiet spot for chopping wood could become a battleground? Dills Bluff, here on James Island, was just such a place. In the waning days of 1782, the British occupied Charleston, and Dills Bluff, with its ready supply of trees, became their firewood source. American Colonel Tadeusz Kosciuszko saw an opportunity to disrupt this routine. He learned that British sailors came to Dills Bluff every morning. He planned an ambush. But the British, alerted to his plan, changed their routine and bolstered their defenses. Kosciuszko tried again on November 14th. His small force of seventy men clashed with over three hundred British troops at Dills Bluff. The fight was short and fierce. American Captain William Wilmot, who had initially proposed the raid, was killed. So was an enslaved man named William Smith, fighting alongside the Americans. Kosciuszko himself had several close calls, even musket balls tearing through his coat. He was ultimately forced to retreat. Dills Bluff may seem unassuming now. But it stands as a reminder of the Revolutionary War’s final days in South Carolina. Captain Wilmot is believed to be the last Continental soldier killed in the Carolinas during the war. This quiet bluff witnessed the last shots fired in anger between the British and American forces in this state. It’s a testament to how even the smallest skirmishes can play a significant role in shaping history.
