Before this marvel opened in 1988, a much smaller bridge stood here. Built in 1901, it could rotate to let ships enter the harbor. But it was only 12 tons strong, and that wasn’t enough for the growing industrial needs of the city. So, in the 1960s, they started planning the new bridge, a double-barreled marvel. The Diffenébrücke, as we know it today, is designed for both road and rail traffic, with a unique opening mechanism that allows it to swing apart for shipping traffic. The bridge’s innovative design earned it a prominent BSVI award in 1990.
The Diffenébrücke is also a symbol of the connection between the historic Luzenberg district and the Friesenheimer Insel. It stretches over the Altrhein, an old arm of the Rhine River, transporting people and goods between two parts of Mannheim.
