They succeeded. Constructed between 1980 and 1981, the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirche seamlessly blends its sanctuary and community spaces. The lead-covered roof houses the church bells, a subtle yet powerful symbol. A simple cross, barely peeking over the roofline, marks the building’s sacred purpose. Otherwise, there’s a deliberate absence of traditional religious architecture. The Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirche is integrated into the community center, a hub of activity and connection. The building itself forms a bridge between the bustling Roderbruchmarkt, a marketplace, and the open area at Nobelring. It occupies two stories, creating a spacious hall that welcomes all. The Dietrich-Bonhoeffer community was founded in 1971. It started as a daughter church of St. Johannis Church in Misburg. Initially, the congregation gathered in a simple barrack, a temporary space that served as their spiritual home. It wasn’t until 1981 that the current community center at Roderbruchmarkt was dedicated. The Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirche is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents the enduring spirit of a community that came together to create a place of worship and belonging.
