Gazing at Die schöne Galatea und die Tritonengruppe, one might hear whispers of the sea. This stunning sculpture group, featuring the sea nymph Galatea surrounded by four Tritons, has a remarkable journey. Originally created around 1620-1650, possibly by the renowned Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bernini, it once graced a fountain in Viterbo, Italy. Imagine it, sparkling under the Italian sun. In 1910, these tuff stone figures resurfaced in Naples, catching the eye of Prussian royalty. Destined for Sanssouci Park, they instead found a home in Brandenburg an der Havel in 1922, thanks to the city’s building commissioner, Moritz Wolf. Die schöne Galatea und die Tritonengruppe, each figure weighing 1.5 tons, were transported from Potsdam. They initially resided near the Grillendamm bathing area, sadly without a proper fountain. Locals affectionately nicknamed Galatea “Widow Bollmann.” A dolphin, originally part of the group, was separated. It now adorns the nearby quay wall. Die schöne Galatea und die Tritonengruppe moved again in 1952 to a less prominent spot. Then, in 2000, the Brandenburg Rotarians championed their restoration. After a four-year, 35,000-euro restoration, Die schöne Galatea und die Tritonengruppe found their current location near St. Petri Church and Brandenburg Cathedral. They stand as a testament to their incredible journey, a unique piece of Italian art now gracing the German landscape.
