Frozen in a timeless game she sits. Die Knöchelspielerin. This bronze sculpture on a small green space is more than just a pretty face. It’s a piece of Essen’s history a story whispered among the leaves.

Bernhard Sopher created this captivating artwork. It’s one of two sculptures gracing the Neue Höhe. The Knöchelspielerin depicts a seated woman her right hand seemingly releasing three small knucklebones.

Before finding her permanent home here she had quite the journey. This statue belonged to the Museum Folkwang. From 1938 onward she traveled. She appeared at exhibitions at the Gruga even during the Federal Horticultural Show. After the Neue Margarethenhöhe was built she found her place here. A copy resides in Düsseldorf’s Rhine Gardens.

Did you know the Knöchelspielerin’s pose is reminiscent of Hellenistic sculpture? Many Roman copies exist. They all show a similar seated woman. She leans on one hand and holds knucklebones. Some versions show the woman slightly clothed. The slight nudity elevates her beyond mere mortal status. She is almost goddess-like.

Think about this tiny detail for a moment. This isn’t just any woman playing a simple game. The Knöchelspielerin is a symbol of something larger. Perhaps a fleeting moment of leisure or a reflection of life’s uncertainties. The careful cast of the sculpture adds to its charm. The way the light plays across the bronze brings her to life. Each tiny detail seems to speak volumes. She’s more than just a sculpture. She is a story waiting to be discovered. A piece of Essen’s soul.

So take a moment. Look closer. Consider the Knöchelspielerin’s quiet power. Let her story linger in your memory long after you’ve moved on from the Neue Höhe. Remember this quiet bronze woman. She’s a part of Essen and her story is interwoven with the city’s fabric.
