Is there anything more powerful than the sun’s warm embrace? Here, at the edge of the Hauptsmoorwald, stands Die Frau und die Sonne, a testament to that very power. Created by the Bulgarian artist Ilia Varbanov Iliev, this sculpture is a relatively new addition to Bamberg’s art scene. It was born during the International Sculpture Symposium in 2009. Despite its youth, Die Frau und die Sonne has quickly become a favorite resting spot for hikers traversing the beautiful trails of the Hauptsmoorwald. The sculpture itself is a study in contrasts. The woman, strong and grounded, seems to almost reach out towards the sun, represented by a large, textured disc. The interplay of light and shadow on the sculpture throughout the day creates an ever-shifting spectacle. It’s a dance between the earthly and the celestial, a reminder of the constant cycle of life and energy that binds us all.
