Gazing across Hamburg’s Inner Alster Lake, have you ever imagined sharing the water with a giant? For ten days in 2011, the impossible became reality. “Die Badende,” German for “The Bather,” a colossal sculpture by Oliver Voss, transformed the lake into the world’s largest bathtub. Die Badende wasn’t your typical artwork. This massive woman, a striking 67 feet long and weighing over two tons, seemed to lounge comfortably in the water, her knees playfully rising above the surface. Only her head and knees were visible, as if she were enjoying a soak in an enormous tub. Die Badende, rising 13 feet out of the water, quickly became a spectacle. Boaters navigated around her, some even renting paddleboats for a closer look. Tourists were awestruck by her size and presence. This intriguing piece wasn’t just an artistic feat; it was a clever advertisement for Soap & Glory, a British beauty products company. Their aim was to promote the “art” of bathing, and Die Badende certainly made a splash, quite literally. While many admired the sculpture, not everyone was thrilled. District mayor Markus Schreiber voiced his concerns, claiming Die Badende was “sullying the beloved lake.” This temporary resident, however grand, couldn’t stay forever. On August 12, a crane hoisted Die Badende out of her watery haven, a giant towel supposedly at the ready to dry her off after her ten-day soak.
