How high do you think the Rheinturm is? It’s the tallest structure in Düsseldorf. Standing proudly at 240.5 meters it dominates the city skyline. This is the Rheinturm.

The Rheinturm wasn’t always a beacon of Düsseldorf. Plans for a similar tower existed before World War I. This “wonder of German iron industry” was envisioned to surpass the Eiffel Tower by 200 meters. A 500-meter marvel. These ambitious plans were ultimately scrapped. Luckily for us.

Construction on the Rheinturm began in 1979. It was completed in 1982. Architect Harald Deilmann’s design was unique. The tower’s structure is a marvel of engineering. It uses a climbing formwork system. This method is typically used for cooling towers. Each 2.5-meter section of the shaft was concreted. The next day the concrete hardened. The formwork moved higher. This process created the impressive structure we see today. The Rheinturm is the only tower built using this method.

The Rheinturm boasts a rotating restaurant. The restaurant rotates once an hour. Technically it rotates in one direction from 1 PM to 4:30 PM. Then it rotates in the opposite direction from 6 PM to midnight. The rest of the time it stands still. The restaurant isn’t the only attraction. There’s also a self-service restaurant and an observation deck offering breathtaking panoramic views. You can see the Medienhafen the Altstadt the Hofgarten the Königsallee and of course the Rhine. On clear days the view extends to the Bergisches Land and even Cologne.

But the Rheinturm’s most unique feature is its light sculpture. Thirty-nine of its 62 portholes form a digital clock. This isn’t just any clock it’s the largest in the world. It’s a testament to the ingenious use of lighting technology.

The Rheinturm began as a telecommunications tower. Today it’s much more. It is a symbol of Düsseldorf. It’s a popular tourist destination visited by 300,000 people annually. A peregrine falcon pair even calls it home. This amazing structure has witnessed the evolution of Düsseldorf. From its solitary position to its current location. The Rheinturm stands as a testament to human innovation and a beacon of Dusseldorf’s enduring spirit. So next time you’re in town don’t forget to visit this iconic landmark.
