Founded in 1965 Diaspora Yeshiva Toras Yisrael stands as a beacon on Mount Zion. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. This wasn’t always its home. Initially located in other parts of Jerusalem it eventually found its place on this sacred hill. Rabbi Mordechai Goldstein a graduate of Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim in Queens New York established this yeshiva. He was inspired by the Alter of Slabodka and Rabbi Yisroel Salanter. His vision was clear. He wanted to create a haven for baalei teshuva. These were Jewish men returning to a traditional life. They needed a place to learn without judgment. A place to grow at their own pace.

Rabbi Dr Shmuel Z Kahane the then Director-General of the Ministry of Religion invited them. The location was significant. It was built on the Martef HaShoah. This was the original Holocaust memorial. Rabbi Goldstein envisioned a powerful connection here. He wanted to elevate the souls of the murdered. The proximity to King David’s Tomb was also meaningful. It symbolizes the connection between teshuva and the future reconstitution of the Kingdom of David. A few minutes away stands the Kotel.

In 1975 Avraham Rosenblum a talented guitarist founded this incredible group. They infused rock and bluegrass music with Jewish lyrics. Their unique sound called Chassidic rock resonated with audiences worldwide. They won three Israel Chassidic Festivals. They became legendary for their Saturday night concerts near King David’s Tomb. The band’s success extended their reach. It drew hundreds of young people into Torah study. The Diaspora Yeshiva Band even performed on MTV’s Musical Passport series. Their music continues to inspire bands like Blue Fringe and 8th Day.
