Tranquil haven. That’s what the Diakonissen Kirche in Frankfurt’s Nordend feels like. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to faith resilience and community spirit.

The Diakonissen Kirche story begins long ago in 1870. The Frankfurter Diakonissenhaus was founded. It was a place of healing a refuge for the needy. Five women four pastors and a lawyer from various Protestant denominations joined forces. They established a strong foundation for service to others. Diakonissen from Karlsruhe initially served at the Diakonissenhaus.

In 1874 a small chapel was built. It quickly proved too small. A new church was needed. Architect Alfred Günther designed a beautiful neo-Gothic basilica. It was completed in 1897. A unique feature? A special area for patients to attend services. Imagine the comfort this provided.

Sadly World War II brought devastation. The Diakonissen Kirche was destroyed by bombing. For years services were held in makeshift locations. A military barrack even served as a temporary church.

Then hope arose. Architects Meixner and Lueken were commissioned to design a new church. The Diakonissen Kirche we see today was dedicated on December 6 1959. It’s a cross-shaped building. Its simple yet elegant design reflects peace and serenity. The altar the baptismal font and the pulpit are works of art. Created by the talented sculptor Renate Goller. The church’s stained-glass windows add to its spiritual beauty. They were the work of Hans Staiger.

The Diakonissen Kirche is more than just a place of worship. It is a symbol of Frankfurt’s history and the enduring spirit of the Diakonissen community. It’s a place to reflect to find peace and to connect with a rich history of faith and service. The four bells from the Rincker foundry in 1959 add to its spiritual presence. Their sound reminds us of the unwavering spirit of this community.

Today the Diakonissenhaus continues its legacy. It offers rooms for meetings and events. The beautiful art nouveau villa and landscaped garden offer a sanctuary. A peaceful oasis in the heart of a bustling city. This is the Diakonissen Kirche a place to discover peace and history in equal measure.
