Did you know that the Dheeran Chinnamalai Statue stands as a tribute to a Kongu chieftain? He bravely revolted against the British East India Company. This happened in the Kongu Nadu region of Tamil Nadu.

Here we stand before the Dheeran Chinnamalai Statue in Chennai. It serves as a powerful reminder of a hero’s fight for freedom. Dheeran Chinnamalai was born Theerthagiri Sarkarai Manradiar on April 17 1756. His birthplace was near Kangeyam in the Tiruppur district.

He wasn’t just any chieftain. He was a key figure in the Polygar Wars. He showed his military skill during the Second Polygar War from 1801 to 1802. Imagine a thousand-strong army under his command. They received French military training to fight alongside Tipu Sultan’s Mysore forces.

After Tipu’s death Dheeran Chinnamalai didn’t back down. He settled in Odanilai and built a fort. From there he launched a series of successful battles against the British between 1801 and 1804. Facing cannon attacks he switched to guerrilla warfare. But in 1805 the British captured him. They hanged him at Sankagiri Fort.

This statue isn’t the only memorial. You can find statues and memorials commemorating Dheeran Chinnamalai in other places. These include Tiruchirappalli Erode and Odanilai. In 2005 India Post released a commemorative postage stamp in his honor.

Until 1997 the Tiruchirapalli division of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bore his name. Even today the headquarters of the Erode district collectorate and the Erode Municipal Corporation are named after him.

Dheeran Chinnamalai’s story is one of courage and resistance. It is a tale of a leader who stood firm against oppression. He is a symbol of pride and honor for the people of the Kongu region. Remember him as you reflect on the sacrifices made for India’s freedom.
