Ever heard of a city that once made spines shiver? That city is Dhaulpur. Dhaulpur is a lesser-known getaway in Rajasthan with a rich ancient lineage. Today we will explore Dhaulpur together.

Dhaulpur’s history stretches back to Buddha’s time. It was part of Matsya Janpad. Later, the Mauryan Empire included it. Legend says Raja Dholan Deo Tomar founded Dhaulpur around 700 AD naming it Dhawalpuri.

Around the 8th to 10th centuries Chauhans ruled here. In 1194 Mohammed Gauri controlled it. Sikandar Lodi defeated Dholpur King Vinayak Dev in 1502. He then captured Dhaulpur.

After Aurangzeb’s death Raja Kalyan Singh Gurjar took over the fort until 1761. Maharaja Surajmal a Jat ruler of Bharatpur then gained control. In 1806 Dholpur became a British protectorate.

Dhaulpur is known for its red sandstone. This stone was used to build the Red Forts in both Agra and Delhi. Even Rashtrapati Bhawan features Dholpur sandstone. You can find it used in roofing flooring and statues.

The Chambal River shapes Dhaulpur’s geography forming its southern border. The river area features ravines and hills. Fine-grained red sandstone comes from these hills.

Dholpur is an agricultural hub. It connects to Agra and Delhi via the Grand Trunk Road. Railway workshops and industries like carpet weaving exist here.

Let’s talk about places to see in Dhaulpur. Machkund is a sacred spot with a picturesque lake. Legend says Raja Muchchhkund slept here. The demon Kaal Yaman woke him up and was burnt to ashes. Pilgrims visit this holy site.

Talab-e-Shahi is a scenic lake with a palace. Prince Shah Jahan used it as a hunting lodge in 1617. Many migratory birds flock here in winter.

Shergarh Fort stands on the Chambal River banks. Raja Maldev likely built it during the Kushan period. Sher Shah Suri reconstructed it in 1540.

Van Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary covers over 25 square kilometers. It is home to animals like Sambhar and Leopard. Ramsagar Sanctuary features Ramsagar Lake. It supports crocodiles water birds and snakes.

Another attraction is the Damoye Waterfall in Sarmathura. It is best seen during the rainy season.

Dholpur faced challenges with banditry until the late 1990s. Deep ravines made it hard to catch the bandits. Today Dholpur is safe to visit.

Dhaulpur offers a unique glimpse into Rajasthan’s history and natural beauty. It is a destination worth exploring. Its red sandstone buildings and wildlife sanctuaries tell tales of the past. Come and discover Dhaulpur’s charm.
