This magnificent structure in Alipore Kolkata is more than just a building. It’s a testament to West Bengal’s vibrant cultural spirit. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee envisioned this architectural marvel. It opened its doors on April 13 2023. The construction took 76 months a journey from August 2016 to November 2022.
The Dhanadhanya Auditorium isn’t just big it’s enormous. Spread across 4.5 acres it stands 49.7 meters tall. It even extends 11.6 meters below ground. The exterior is a stunning three-dimensional conch shell a symbol deeply rooted in Indian culture. This unique design is covered in 10000 square meters of zinc imported all the way from France. Supporting this incredible shell are 3700 metric tons of structural steel. The sheer scale of the project is breathtaking. Consider the concrete and reinforcement: 43000 cubic meters and 12000 metric tons. Then there are the lights 30000 imported from Ireland. Each one contributing to the building’s stunning illumination.
Inside the Dhanadhanya Auditorium you’ll find a main auditorium seating 2000. A smaller auditorium holds 540 while a street theatre allows for 350 standing. Ten lifts and twenty-two escalators ensure easy navigation. There’s a VIP lounge. There are also three banquet halls. A double basement car park provides space for 300 vehicles. Cafeteria and food court are also available. A dormitory adds to the complete facility. This is not just a venue. It is a full-fledged event complex.
The Dhanadhanya Auditorium cost 440 crore rupees to build. The Public Works Department of West Bengal constructed it. The West Bengal Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO) now manages and maintains this architectural masterpiece. Its grand opening marked a significant moment for Kolkata’s cultural landscape. This architectural marvel is poised to become a leading venue for spectacular events.
