It’s the powerhouse, quite literally, behind Dubai’s dazzling skyline and comfortable lifestyle. Established on January 1, 1992, by Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, DEWA emerged from the merger of the Dubai Electricity Company and the Dubai Water Department. These two entities, originally founded in 1959 by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, laid the groundwork for what DEWA is today. DEWA’s mission is simple yet vital: to provide a consistent and dependable supply of electricity and water to everyone in Dubai. Think about that for a moment. In a city that constantly pushes the boundaries of architecture and innovation, DEWA ensures that the lights stay on and the water flows. By the end of 2019, DEWA served an impressive 915,623 electricity customers and 816,580 water customers. This enormous undertaking was managed by a workforce of 11,727 employees. That same year, DEWA boasted an installed capacity of 11,400 MW of electric power and a desalination capacity of 470 million imperial gallons (or 2.14 billion liters) of water per day. But DEWA isn’t just about maintaining the status quo. The organization is forward-thinking and committed to sustainability. While historically relying on conventional gas-fired power plants, DEWA has embarked on an ambitious project: the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. This massive 5GW solar park is breaking records for its cost-effectiveness in both photovoltaic and concentrated solar power generation. The initial phase, a 13 MW solar plant, was completed in 2013, followed by a 200 MW second phase. An even larger 800 MW phase was finished by 2020. The future looks even brighter. DEWA has plans for a 250 MW pumped-storage hydroelectric plant in Hatta, utilizing a staggering 880 million gallons of water elevated 300 meters above a lower dam.
