Astonishing isn’t it? This grand building before us is Devlin Hall. It stands as a testament to Boston College’s rich history. Devlin Hall wasn’t always so impressive.

Devlin Hall was originally called the Recitation Building. Later it became known as the Tower Building. This imposing Gothic structure is one of four forming the Quad on Boston College’s Middle Campus. It holds a special place in the college’s history.

In 1924 the first classes in chemistry physics and biology were held within its walls. Devlin Hall served as the heart of scientific research at Boston College for many years. Imagine Casper Augustus Ferguson. He was Boston College’s first African-American graduate. After a long day of studies in Devlin Hall he would head to South Station. There he carried passengers’ bags to pay his tuition.

The building’s significance goes beyond its scientific past. Today Devlin Hall houses the Undergraduate Admissions Office. It’s where countless students begin their Boston College journey. A major renovation in 1991 transformed the space. The renovation included a new Visitor’s Center a 90-seat Information Room and a stunning two-story McMullen Museum. A 300-seat auditorium the largest on campus was also added.

The limestone and pudding stone façade underwent complete restoration. Linea 5 a renowned architectural firm carefully preserved the building’s original Gothic Revival style. They even unearthed and restored limestone pilasters that had been hidden during previous renovations.

Devlin Hall is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where history unfolds. It’s a place where dreams take flight. It’s a place where generations of students have learned grown and contributed to the world. Look closely at this building. See the stories whispered in its stones. Feel the weight of history. That’s the magic of Devlin Hall.
