Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Bangkok’s history stands the magnificent Devavesm Palace. Devavesm Palace whispers tales of royalty, diplomacy, and architectural splendor. King Vajiravudh, Rama VI, commissioned this palace. It was a gift for his uncle, Prince Devawongse Varoprakar. Prince Devawongse was a prominent figure in Thai history. He is known as the father of foreign affairs in Thailand. The construction of Devavesm Palace began in 1914 and concluded in 1918. The palace showcases a stunning blend of neoclassical styles. Greek and Roman influences grace its elegant facade. British architect Edward Healey oversaw the design and construction of the main mansion, Tamnak Yai. Italian architect E.G. Gollo, renowned for his work on the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, contributed to the palace complex. He supervised the completion of seven additional buildings. The Devavesm Palace has changed hands throughout the years. In 1950, the Ministry of Public Health purchased it for 4.5 million. They used it as an office. In 1987, the Bank of Thailand acquired the palace. They renovated the main mansion and transformed it into the exhibition halls of the Bank of Thailand Museum. The palace grounds once held a dividing wall. This wall separated Devavesm Palace from the neighboring Bang Khun Phrom Palace. Today, the wall is gone. Both palaces are under the ownership of the Bank of Thailand. In 2005, Tamnak Yai received an Honourable Mention in the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. It stands as a testament to its remarkable preservation. Devavesm Palace stands as a proud symbol of Thailand’s rich heritage.
