“Sunrise chasers, assemble!” That’s what I imagine the Deux Mamelles Mountains whisper to hikers each morning. These peaks beckon us to explore their trails and witness nature’s grand spectacle. Deux Mamelles, also known as the Two Mamelles, presents a unique hiking experience.
Mauritius is an island of unparalleled beauty. It features sapphire-blue lagoons and stunning landscapes. Hiking Deux Mamelles offers unforgettable views. You will see volcanic peaks, waterfalls, and rare flora and fauna.
Many visitors recommend an early start. The goal is to catch the breathtaking sunrise from the top of Deux Mamelles. Though relatively easy, a guide and proper footwear are essential due to steep areas. Some signs along the trail can be confusing.
Let’s talk routes. Montagne Deux Mamelles boasts an east and a west summit. The east route is clear and short. The west route is faint and overgrown. It can be difficult to follow. The east route is recommended.
The east route is an out-and-back trail. It begins in sugarcane fields near Beau Bois. The end point is the summit. It is about 1.4 miles round trip. Expect it to take about 1 to 1.5 hours. The lowest point is at 1552 feet. The highest point is 2093 feet. The total elevation gain is 602 feet.
To start, turn off Beau Bois Road onto the road heading into the sugarcane fields. This road might be blocked with rocks. If so, park along the road and walk. Look at the peaks. The west route climbs straight up the face. The east route starts on the far east side. Continue on the road. A forest will appear after a few hundred feet. Turn right before the forest. Many roads lead to the same destination. Aim for the far right or east side of the mountain. A trail will appear on your left or west. Follow this trail to a saddle. At the saddle, you’ll see a few spiky trees. The trail to the summit begins between these trees. The trail might not be very clear here. Once inside the brush and trees, the trail becomes clear. Follow it to the summit. Crossing over to the west peak doesn’t seem easy. Return along the same route.
The west route is also an out-and-back trail. It begins in sugarcane fields near Beau Bois. The end point is the summit. The length is about 1 mile round trip. The duration is about 1 to 2 hours. The lowest point is 1524 feet. The highest point is 2088 feet. The total elevation gain is 699 feet.
Turn off Beau Bois Road onto the road leading to the sugarcane fields. This road may be blocked. Park and walk. As you approach, look at the peaks. The west route climbs straight up. The east route starts on the far east side. Continue straight on this road until it ends. The trail begins straight ahead in the brush. It is relatively well-defined initially. It will fade in and out. You will reach a more well-defined trail. Cross it and continue straight. The trail fades in and out. Keep your eyes open. Find the best path forward while maintaining your direction. The trail becomes steep at times. It is not overly physically challenging. Don’t go to the east peak from the summit. Return the same way. Avoid the well-defined route that turns towards Malenga.
Remember, hikers praise the panoramic views from the top. They are rewarding and worth the effort. Be cautious as the trails can be slippery after rain.
As you stand atop Deux Mamelles, feel the accomplishment. The panoramic views will leave you breathless. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty. The memories created here will last a lifetime.
