Founded in 1890 the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg stands before you. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of education and cultural exchange. Picture a time when Johannesburg was young. Gold had lured a wave of people. Among them was a substantial German community. They longed for a school that would preserve their language and heritage. Pastor Hermann Friedrich Ludwig Kuschke answered this call. He began teaching in 1890. His lessons started in his home. Soon they moved to the Berlin Mission Community church. Just one student at first. Twenty by the end of the year.

The school grew reflecting Johannesburg’s growth. By 1897 enough money was raised. A new school building rose in Hillbrow. A gift of land came from Paul Kruger himself. The Deutsche Schule Johannesburg was born. This wasn’t just a school. It was a beacon of German culture in a burgeoning city. It faced challenges. World War I forced its closure. The building was even leased to the government. The war’s shadow lingered. But the school persevered.

In 1920 classes restarted. Slowly the school regained its footing. Sporting events and music filled its halls. By World War II the school again faced uncertainty. Its commitment to neutrality allowed it to stay open. This was despite the anti-German sentiment. It even managed to hold matric exams in 1942.

Post-war immigration brought more Germans. The school needed more space. So it moved. In 1969 the school relocated to its current Parktown home. This modern building was state-of-the-art. It reflected the school’s commitment to providing a first-rate education. The school continued expanding its programs. Preschool was added in 1979. The first Abitur exams were held in 1983. A commitment to integration led to including South African students in 1989. The school even provides Saturday lessons for children from Soweto.

Today the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg thrives. It boasts approximately 1050 students from over 38 countries. This school is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to resilience and to the power of education to bridge cultures. The legacy of Pastor Kuschke lives on. It thrives in the hearts and minds of the students who have passed through its doors. This incredible school stands as a symbol of the enduring strength of the German community in Johannesburg. A community that has enriched the city for over a century.
