Hidden in the shadows of history, Deutsch Ossig in Görlitz whispers tales of a vanished world. Once a thriving village nestled within Görlitz, Deutsch Ossig met a tragic end, swallowed by the insatiable hunger of the open-pit lignite mines between 1990 and 1992. Deutsch Ossig wasn’t always a ghost town. In 1305, Heinrich von Salza held the unified estate that would one day become Deutsch Ossig. Over the centuries, it passed through various hands, evolving from a simple estate to a Rittergut, a knight’s manor. Jakob Schleiffe inherited the property in 1410, bequeathing the Vorwerk, a type of farm, to his eldest son. A few decades later, Deutsch Ossig became entwined with the powerful Canitz family. The year 1526 marked Deutsch Ossig’s first mention as a Rittergut, a testament to its growing importance. The Frenzel family, then owners, sold the estate within the family to Görlitz’s mayor, Peter Thile. Unfortunately, his death in 1535 sparked twelve years of inheritance disputes. King Ferdinand I, ruler of Bohemia and Margrave of Upper Lusatia, intervened. He decreed the division of Deutsch Ossig into three separate entities: Ober-Deutsch-Ossig (Upper Deutsch Ossig), Nieder-Deutsch-Ossig (Lower Deutsch Ossig), and Mittel-Deutsch-Ossig (Middle Deutsch Ossig). A portion of Nieder-Deutsch-Ossig and Mittel-Deutsch-Ossig would later merge, creating a new estate known as Dominium Mittel-Deutsch-Ossig II. Sadly, the lignite mines claimed Nieder-Deutsch-Ossig and the Dominium, leaving only fragments of their story behind. Today, the manor houses of Ober-Deutsch-Ossig and Mittel-Deutsch-Ossig stand empty, bearing silent witness to Deutsch Ossig’s rich past. These skeletal remains are located near Strandpromenade 63.
