The Detroit Police Department HQ served the city for ninety years. The building witnessed the city’s evolution, its triumphs, and its struggles. The cornerstone was laid in late 1921, with Otto Misch Co. leading the construction. By December 1922, the traffic unit had already settled in. The rest of the force followed shortly after, making this grand building their new home. The move marked a significant upgrade from the old 1300 Beaubien location. The Detroit Police Department HQ, with its imposing presence, became a familiar landmark. For decades, the Detroit Police Department HQ stood as a silent guardian. In 2013, the department relocated to the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters on Third Avenue. The old headquarters, steeped in history, was left vacant. The future of the Detroit Police Department HQ remained uncertain for a time. As part of Detroit’s bankruptcy settlement, the building became the property of Syncora Guarantee Inc. They controlled it through their subsidiary, Pike Pointe Holdings LLC. In 2018, a glimmer of hope appeared. Dan Gilbert’s Bedrock announced plans to acquire and redevelop the 240,000-square-foot building. This was a partnership with Pike Pointe, promising a new chapter for the historic structure. Bedrock CEO Jim Ketai expressed excitement about reviving this piece of Detroit’s architectural heritage. He acknowledged the growth of Greektown and surrounding areas, making this the perfect time for the building’s rebirth. However, details about the redevelopment plans remained scarce. The intended use, the timeline, and the cost were not disclosed. Even now, years later, the Detroit Police Department HQ awaits its next chapter.
