This unassuming plaque tells a powerful story. It commemorates the Detroit Association of Women’s Clubs. This wasn’t just any organization. It was a beacon of strength and resilience. Formed in 1921 from eight Black women’s clubs the Association became a force for change.

The women faced immense challenges. They were excluded from mainstream women’s clubs. They tackled social reform like suffrage and temperance. But their focus was broader. They addressed a wider range of issues impacting their community. The Detroit Association of Women’s Clubs championed charitable work. They provided scholarships for African American youth. They supported education and spiritual growth for their members.

By 1945 the Association boasted over 70 clubs and 3000 members. This demonstrates their incredible impact. Their dedication was unwavering. Their collective strength was phenomenal. Their influence on Detroit was profound.

Their quest for a permanent headquarters is especially compelling. In 1941 club members pooled their resources. They aimed to buy a house. Dr Rosa Lee Slade Gragg the president took out a second mortgage on her home. The down payment was $2000. This was a huge financial commitment.

Their chosen property had a restrictive deed. It forbade Black ownership west of Brush Street. White neighbors threatened legal action. Dr Gragg cleverly circumvented this racist rule. She simply moved the main entrance to Brush Street. This ingenious maneuver ensured the Association’s success.

The house still serves as the Detroit Association of Women’s Clubs headquarters. It stands within the East Ferry Avenue Historic District. This area was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The plaque we see today is a testament to their perseverance. It’s a symbol of their enduring legacy. Their contributions to Detroit are immeasurable. It reminds us of their incredible achievements against incredible odds. Their story inspires us all.
