Ready to explore the Detached Mole? This breakwater stands firm in Gibraltar Harbour. It is a testament to engineering ingenuity.

The Detached Mole is more than just concrete. It’s a key part of Gibraltar’s defense system. It protects the harbor from the elements and potential threats. Alongside the North Mole and South Mole, the Detached Mole helps to create a safe harbor.

Let’s step back in time. Construction of the Detached Mole took place between 1888 and 1901. It modernized the harbor facilities. The goal was to fortify the port. Each concrete block weighs 28 tons. Barges deposited rubble stone. Divers leveled it before placing the blocks. This solid foundation ensures the mole’s strength.

The Detached Mole has strategic importance. It sits in the middle section of Gibraltar Harbour. This location is just north of the Strait of Gibraltar’s east entrance. It provides berths for ships of all sizes.

Did you know the Detached Mole has its own lighthouses? The Gibraltar Detached Mole (“B” Head) Lighthouse marks the south end. It has a quick flashing red light. The Gibraltar Detached Mole (“C” Head) Lighthouse sits at the north end. It displays a quick flashing green light. Both have a range of 5 nautical miles. These lights guide ships safely into the harbor.

Commercial boats use the north entrance. It lies between the “C” Head of the Detached Mole and the “D” Head of the Western Arm of the North Mole. The Queen’s Harbourmaster controls the south entrance. This is between the “A” Head of the South Mole and the “B” Head of the Detached Mole.

There’s more to the Detached Mole than meets the eye. Divers explore wrecks near the mole. The SS Excellent sank off the Detached Mole in 1888. It split in two and rests upside down. It is now a popular dive site. The HMT Erin was sunk by sabotage in 1942. Its remains may lie near the Detached Mole too.

The Gibraltar Museum’s Underwater Research Unit and the Joint Services Dive Club research the “Inner and Outer” dive sites. They received the first annual “Adopt a Wreck” Award in 2003 for their work.

In 2011, the UK Ministry of Defence transferred ownership of the Detached Mole. It is now completely owned by the Government of Gibraltar. This marked a significant moment in Gibraltar’s history.

The Detached Mole continues to play a vital role. It offers yachting facilities at Queensway Quay Marina. This marina has 160 berths for yachts. Cormorant Camber and the Coaling Island quay are also nearby.

As you stand here, consider the Detached Mole’s rich history. It protected the harbor, aided navigation, and provided recreational opportunities. The Detached Mole remains a testament to Gibraltar’s maritime heritage.
