A symphony of scents and colors greets you at Descanso Gardens. Breathe it in. Feel the tranquility.

Descanso Gardens a botanical wonderland in La Cañada Flintridge is more than just a pretty face. It’s a living tapestry woven from history horticulture and even a touch of Hollywood drama. The gardens rest on land once home to the Tongva people then part of the vast Rancho San Rafael.

Our story begins in 1937. Elias Manchester Boddy a newspaper publisher with a penchant for plants purchased this land. He envisioned a sanctuary a Rancho del Descanso or Ranch of Rest. Boddy an ambitious man didn’t just plant flowers he created a legacy. He commissioned a magnificent mansion the Boddy House a Hollywood Regency masterpiece designed by James Dolena.

A tragic irony shadows Descanso’s blooming beauty. During World War II Japanese American families who owned nurseries were unjustly interned. Boddy purchased thousands of camellias from these nurseries helping to build Descanso’s world renowned collection. While some accounts suggest Boddy acted sympathetically others indicate he may have taken advantage of the situation. This complexity adds a layer to the story reminding us of the human element behind the flowers.

Descanso’s fame grew. Boddy opened the gardens to the public initially causing a stir among neighbors. Then he sold Descanso to Los Angeles County securing its future as a public treasure.

The gardens continued to evolve. A Japanese Garden a tranquil oasis designed by Eikiro Nunokawa was added in 1966. This garden symbolizes a beautiful reconciliation a testament to the enduring power of horticulture. Today Descanso boasts diverse collections including the Ancient Forest a glimpse into prehistoric plant life.

Descanso Gardens is not just a place to stroll among roses and camellias. It’s a living museum a testament to the interwoven stories of nature and humanity. It is a place of reflection. It is a place of beauty. It is Descanso Gardens a place to rest and remember.
