Originally known as Altenderne-Oberbecker it had a separate identity. On November 22 1922 Altenderne-Niederbecker and Hostedde joined it. The name changed to Derne on October 27 1923.

Derne’s story is intrinsically linked to coal mining. The Zeche Gneisenau mine began operations in 1873. Its first coal was extracted in 1886.
