Why is that bronze figure sitting so pensively on the steps? That, my friends, is Der Forscher, a statue of Alexander von Humboldt. He’s not just any researcher. He’s one of the most important alumni of the university here, the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Der Forscher is part of Freiberg’s Silberweg, a path winding through the old town, dotted with silver statues. Each statue tells a piece of Freiberg’s rich history. Der Forscher sits right outside the university’s lecture hall center, almost as if he’s contemplating his next great discovery. Sculptor Robert Frenzel brought Humboldt back to his alma mater in this way. Humboldt studied natural and mining sciences here until 1792. He even dabbled in developing technical devices, like a light preserver. One of his most famous Freiberg discoveries? The underground plant life he documented in his 1793 publication, “Flora Fribergensis.” He identified and described many of these species for the very first time. The knowledge he gained in Freiberg served him well throughout his expeditions to Russia and Latin America. Humboldt, a true “MINT student,” embodies the ideals of open-mindedness and courage. He’s a fitting symbol for Freiberg, a city steeped in the pursuit of knowledge. Der Forscher isn’t just a statue. It’s a tribute to a remarkable mind and an invitation to explore the wonders of Freiberg. Remember to look for the hidden mouse on the statue. It’s a playful detail connecting all the figures along the Silberweg.
