Behold Monte Mülllo. This isn’t your average hill. It’s the Deponie Hannover a mountain made of trash. Right here in the Lahe district of Hanover.

For decades this landfill grew. It started in 1937 replacing smaller dumps around the city. Initially trucks couldn’t reach the marshy ground. So they used a small railway to move the waste.

The mountain kept expanding. By 1982 it had reached 122 meters above sea level. That made it Hanover’s highest point surpassing even the natural Kronsberg. Burning gas clouds and even an explosion were common occurrences then.

Eventually they organized the waste disposal. Layers of trash were carefully placed. Earth walls were built for later restoration. The northern part was closed in 1982 and replanted. A second lower section continued until 2005. This newer section used better safety standards.

Since 2005 only pre-treated waste is added. This is due to new environmental regulations. Organic material is removed for other processing. The remaining inert waste is what makes up this unusual peak.

Today Monte Mülllo is a fascinating blend of the past and present. It’s a monument to Hanover’s history of waste management. It’s also a testament to how waste disposal has improved. Plans exist even to use a repurposed Expo 2000 pavilion here. It could enhance Hanover’s bid for the 2025 title of European Capital of Culture.

So next time you see this impressive hill remember. This isn’t just a pile of garbage. It’s a unique part of Hanover’s story. It’s a place that tells the story of our relationship with waste. From simple carts in 1435 to modern waste processing this is a mountain of history. Monte Mülllo the Deponie Hannover.
