Envision yourself stepping back in time to 1960 at the Department of Physics, nestled within Middle East Technical University, or METU, in Ankara. Initially, the university housed two distinct physics entities: the Department of Theoretical Physics and the Department of Physics. These two powerhouses merged in the 1970-1971 academic year, solidifying the Department of Physics as we know it today. This department wasn’t built overnight. It has history, a rich tapestry woven with the contributions of brilliant minds. Pioneers like Erdal İnönü and Feza Gürsey laid the foundation, sparking research in particle physics and gravitation in the 1960s. The Department of Physics quickly became a magnet for emerging talent. Think of Ordal Demokan, Cavit Erginsoy, Dilhan Eryurt, and Hakkı Ögelman joining the ranks in the 1970s, expanding the research horizons to include plasma physics, solid-state physics, astrophysics, and even solar energy. This vibrant atmosphere nurtured groundbreaking research, earning both national and international acclaim. Generations of faculty and students have built upon this legacy, creating a tradition of excellence that continues to this day. Today, the Department of Physics at METU buzzes with activity. A dedicated faculty of 32 members guides nearly 35 research assistants, almost 100 graduate students, and close to 600 undergraduates. The department offers a robust curriculum, balancing fundamental physics principles with opportunities to delve into specialized areas like theoretical and applied physics. The research here is diverse and cutting-edge, pushing the boundaries of what we know. From astrophysics to condensed matter physics, high-energy physics to lasers, and even quantum information theory, the Department of Physics is at the forefront of discovery. The faculty members are actively involved in nationally and internationally funded projects, collaborating with world-renowned research centers and groups. They are not just adding to our understanding of the universe; they’re shaping it, leaving their mark on the scientific landscape.
