Here at the D Département de Géologie, part of the Ibn Zohr University, you’re not just surrounded by impressive architecture. You’re at the heart of geological research in Agadir. This department is more than just a building. It’s a hub for understanding the very land we stand on, especially crucial with the environmental challenges faced by the Grand Agadir region. One research project conducted here focused on the Tamelast landfill, a site grappling with the byproducts of our consumption habits. The D Département de Géologie researchers delved into the geological and hydrogeological characteristics of the landfill site. They produced maps, stratigraphic vertical sections, and cross-sections to comprehend the environmental risks. Their findings revealed that the Tamelast landfill sits on Campanian and Maastrichtian marl-limestone and carbonate ranges. These fractured formations, acting as a potential aquifer, have a permeability ranging from 5.10-4 to 10-3m/s and a transmissivity of 10-2 to 5.10-2 m2/s. This data is crucial in understanding the potential for leachate contamination. The D Département de Géologie’s work on the Tamelast landfill highlights their crucial role in finding sustainable solutions for Agadir’s environmental future.
