Deo Gratias Photography Archive in Jamestown Accra isn’t just a studio. It’s a living testament to Ghana’s past. Founded in 1922 by James Koblah Bruce Vanderpuije it’s the oldest operating photo studio in Ghana. The name Deo Gratias Latin for Thanks be to God reflects the family’s deep faith.

Its founder James a man from a middle-class Jamestown family learned photography from J A C Holm. After three years he opened Deo Gratias. He photographed British Indian families and Black aristocrats. Before the 1970s he even covered product launches for companies. His son Isaac Hudson followed in his footsteps. He even studied photography in Leipzig Germany becoming the first African at that school.

The archive holds over 50000 images. They chronicle Ghana’s journey to independence. They capture the changing social dynamics of Accra. You’ll see photos of the UGCC the party that fought for independence. You might even see pictures of Kwame Nkrumah himself. You will also find images of Lebanese and Indian migrants who built lives in Ghana. These photographs show a multi-ethnic Accra often overlooked in history books.

The studio continued through generations. Isaac’s daughter Kate Tamakloe Vanderpuije now manages Deo Gratias. She’s preserving this incredible legacy. She’s scanning the glass plates and negatives. She’s keeping the stories alive. She hopes to create a permanent exhibition space. She wants Ghanaians to see their own history reflected in these images.

Today Deo Gratias still takes passport photos. Yet it also preserves a precious piece of Ghanaian heritage. It shows the richness of its past. It stands as a reminder of how photography captured a nation’s story. It’s a place where history breathes life into every image. Visit Deo Gratias. Discover Ghana’s visual past.
