Curious about how a single school transformed urban education? Let’s explore the story of Denver School of Science and Technology. Known today as DSST Public Schools it began with a clear mission. That mission was to eliminate educational inequity. It aimed to prepare all students for college and the 21st century.

The story of Denver School of Science and Technology starts in 2004. That year, the first high school opened in the Park Hill neighborhood. Bill Kurtz served as the founding principal. The focus was on STEM subjects for all students. The goal was college success regardless of background.

From the start, Denver School of Science and Technology integrated six core values. These were respect, responsibility, integrity, courage, curiosity and doing your best. Academic rigor was equally important. The aim was to give students a voice. They needed soft skills for life outside the classroom. Confidence was key too. By 2008, the first graduating class had a 100 percent college acceptance rate. This showed the model worked.

As years passed, Denver School of Science and Technology grew. It became DSST Public Schools. The network expanded to seven middle schools and six high schools. Each graduating class saw 100 percent college acceptance. Students were admitted to top schools nationwide.

DSST’s success wasn’t accidental. The school developed a template focused on STEM. It also included a liberal arts education. This model led to the creation of many top-ranked inner-city public schools. The original high school served 400 students in grades 9-12.

Students at Denver School of Science and Technology follow a rigorous curriculum. They must pass pre-calculus and complete five years of science. A workplace internship is required. A senior project is also essential for graduation.

DSST quickly gained recognition. By 2015, the Stapleton campus ranked high nationally. It was 192nd overall and 158th in STEM education. Among charter schools, it ranked 55th. In Colorado, it was fifth. The school excelled in math and college readiness. It also emphasized values-centered culture. Respect and responsibility were daily priorities.

Significant donations supported the growth of Denver School of Science and Technology. John C Malone gave $7 million. The Daniels Fund granted $3 million. Oprah Winfrey donated $1 million. These contributions helped expand opportunities for students.

In 2024, Nella García Urban became CEO. She aimed to continue the mission of DSST Public Schools. The goal was to offer high-quality STEM education. Character development remained a key focus. The network aimed to prepare students for success.

So, as we stand here think about the impact of Denver School of Science and Technology. It’s a story of vision. It is a story of dedication and a commitment to transforming education. It stands as a beacon. It shows what is possible when a school prioritizes both academic excellence and character development.
