“Did anyone bring their gold nuggets?” a voice called out, jokingly, from our group. Laughter rippled through us as we stood before the imposing Denver Mint. This isn’t just any mint. The Denver Mint is a behemoth of coin production, the single largest producer of coins in the world. Its story, however, doesn’t begin with this grand structure. It starts a few miles away, at the corner of 16th and Market, with a private firm called Clark, Gruber & Co. During the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, miners flooded Denver, pockets brimming with gold dust. Shipping that gold back East was expensive and risky. Clark, Gruber & Co. offered a solution. They opened a private mint in 1860, transforming that gold dust into glittering $10 and $20 gold pieces. Their mint churned out coins “at the rate of fifteen or twenty coins a minute,” each one stamped with images of Pikes Peak or the Goddess of Liberty. They even added $2.50 and $5 coins to their repertoire later. This private mint was a vital part of Denver’s early economy, minting nearly $600,000 worth of gold coins in just three years. The government, however, eventually caught up. In 1863, they bought out Clark, Gruber & Co.’s building and equipment for $25,000, transforming it into a U.S. Assay Office. The Denver Mint as we know it began construction in 1897 at its current location on West Colfax and Delaware. Coin production commenced in 1906, marking a new chapter in the Denver Mint’s story. Over a century later, this mint continues its legacy, striking millions of coins daily, a testament to Denver’s enduring connection to precious metals.
