Denver Heights COGIC stands as a cornerstone of modern Pentecostalism in South Texas. It’s one of the first churches established after the transformative Azusa Street Revival in 1906. That revival spread Pentecostalism across the 20th century. Denver Heights played a vital role in that spread. Its legacy resonates even today.
Pastor F.C.V. Foard arrived in San Antonio in 1913. He began his ministry preaching on street corners and in tents. His unwavering dedication laid the foundation for this church. The church’s initial services were held in a modest building. It was before the current structure on Dreiss Street was built. They later moved to Roberts Street before returning to Denver Heights in 1920. The church was then called “The First Church”.
The church has seen many dedicated leaders. Elder R.M. Paige Bishop E.E. Hamilton and others followed Pastor Foard. Countless members contributed to the ministry’s success. Mother Montgomery Sister Dobbins and many more were instrumental in shaping the church’s identity.
Elder J.B. Pope Jr. took over after Elder L.C. Smith. He oversaw significant renovations to the church’s nearly century-old building. His son Elder Joseph Pope continues his father’s legacy. He guides Denver Heights COGIC today. The church actively participates in regional national and international networks. It remains a central figure in the religious landscape.
