Denpraporn Church holds within its walls a story that reflects the changing tides of Chiang Mai itself. In the 1930s, the seeds of change were sown. Two French priests, Father George Mirabel and Father Nicolas Bunkerd Kitbamrung, arrived with a vision. They built Denpraporn Church, a school, and a rectory, laying the foundation for a Catholic community in this predominantly Buddhist region. Their message resonated, leading to numerous conversions. But their teachings went beyond religion. They championed human rights, advocating for fair labor practices and challenging the existing social order. This sparked opposition, culminating in the tumultuous period of anti-Catholicism from 1940 to 1944. Catholic services were banned, and the community faced discrimination. Denpraporn Church stood as a beacon of hope during these dark times. Following World War II, the Thai government reversed its stance on Catholicism. Denpraporn Church, once a symbol of defiance, became a testament to resilience. It stands today as a reminder of the trials overcome and the enduring spirit of faith.
