“Der Herr segne und beschütze dich” whispers the bronze figure of Saint Francis. This is the Denkmal für den Heiligen Franziskus in Dortmund a poignant reminder of faith and resilience. It stands here a testament to a long and complex history.

The Denkmal itself is a relatively recent addition to Dortmund’s landscape. Created by Hildegard Schürk-Frisch in 1983 it depicts Saint Francis in a peaceful pose. The inscription a simple blessing adds a touch of heartfelt devotion. The statue’s height of 1.5 meters makes it an intimate yet significant presence.

However the story of Saint Francis in Dortmund extends far beyond this bronze figure. The first Franciscan monastery in Dortmund dates back to between 1232 and 1244. These early friars played a vital role in the city’s spiritual life. Their original church and monastery were sadly destroyed in 1805 during the secularization.

The current St. Franziskus Church the Franziskanerkirche is the second post-Reformation Roman Catholic church in Dortmund. This newer building which stands not far from the Denkmal embodies a spirit of renewal. Built in a neo-Gothic style between 1898 and 1902 it demonstrates the resurgence of Catholicism in a city known for its Protestant heritage. This new church became a focal point for the growing Catholic community particularly for Polish workers who migrated to Dortmund during industrialization.

The church’s rich interior further enriches its history. Its stained glass windows created by artists like Nikolaus Bette and Wilhelm Buschulte tell vivid stories of saints. These include scenes from the lives of St Anthony of Padua St Francis of Assisi and Brother Jordan Mai. The altar boasts a beautiful carved retable from a Lippstadt workshop and neo-Gothic altarpieces from the dissolved Franciscan monastery in Osnabrück.

Even the church’s organ a Franz Breil instrument from 1969 has a story to tell. Subsequently renovated in 2018 this magnificent instrument continues to fill the church with inspiring music.

Brother Jordan Mai a significant figure in the Dortmund Franciscan community is also remembered here. His remains were transferred to the church in 1950 a testament to his enduring influence. The ongoing process for his beatification highlights the reverence he continues to inspire.

So as you stand before the Denkmal für den Heiligen Franziskus contemplate its quiet strength. It represents not only a single moment in time but the enduring spirit of faith community and remembrance in the heart of Dortmund. The statue’s simple blessing serves as a powerful reminder of the spiritual legacy that lives on.
